SLJ Review of Betty the Yeti
“Mama Yeti, Betty, and her twin brothers, Eddy and Freddy, are the only yetis in town.” Each title in the series begins with a brief introduction to this premise, allowing children to dive into the books in any order without confusion. In these new additions, Betty Yeti embarks on fun adventures, including learning to grow flowers, staying up late to play a spooky game with her brothers, meeting a dog for the first time, and sweating at a state park due to her thick fur. Themes of trying new experiences and making friends are central throughout the series. With vibrant illustrations on nearly every page, simple text, short sentences, and a large font size, the books are well-suited for newly independent readers. While the plotlines are lighthearted and entertaining, some of the endings feel a bit abrupt.
VERDICT: A solid early chapter book series, recommended for larger library collections.
