SLJ Review of Animal Arts and Crafts

A love of crafting and animal facts are brought together in this cute series for elementary readers. From papier-mâché sea turtles to floating hippos, the crafts in these volumes are wide-ranging in skill level. Each craft project includes a list of necessary items and offers both written and visual step-by-step instructions. There are approximately ten projects per title, with one or two facts about the topic animal noted throughout the craft instructions. A full-page color photo of select animals accompanies additional facts such as, “Scarlet macaws nest inside holes in trees,” (Wild Animal Crafts). The crafts do not include a suggested skill level, but readers, caregivers, and educators can assess the difficulty level of each activity at a glance. Front matter includes a table of contents and a “Before You Start” section that introduces the topic and offers tips for crafting safety. Back matter has a glossary and index. VERDICT A fun series for elementary children who love making and learning. Great for class projects or library programs.
