Booklist Review of Sedimentary Rocks

Ah, the striated beauty of sedimentary rock. If you didn’t appreciate it before, you will after reading this selection from The Rock Cycle Road Trip series (6 titles). Adorned with retro road signs, this book guides readers through the geological basics of sedimentary rocks and the rock cycle while also cruising by famous sites (“Rock Stop!”) where such rocks can be seen. There are also frequent “Rock Star” profiles that describe an important type of sedimentary rock (e.g., rock salt, limestone, shale, sandstone), laying out a two-page graphic spread that notes the rock’s characteristics, “hotspots” (locations where commonly found, indicated on a world map), boxed facts, and photos. It’s an effective approach because it does more than pair text with examples. The information is integrated (or reintegrated) at each stop, helping readers to synthesize the concepts in real-world contexts. The importance of this ubiquitous rock comes through in discussions of fossils, fossil fuels, natural building materials, and groundwater. Closing tips for newly minted rock hounds are followed by a quiz to further chisel knowledge into their brains.
